The 2025 Nepal Gen-Z protests began after the government imposed a nationwide ban on major social media platforms, a move widely viewed by young people as an attack on freedom of expression. Years of frustration over corruption, political instability, unemployment, nepotism, and limited economic opportunities had already created deep public resentment. Student-led demonstrations that initially focused on restoring access to social media quickly evolved into a nationwide anti-government movement.

Following violent clashes between protesters and security forces, public anger intensified, leading to widespread unrest, attacks on government institutions, the burning of the parliament building and other state offices, and ultimately the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli. The government’s collapse marked one of Nepal’s most significant episodes of political upheaval in recent decades.
